Elwyn's Bruce Weschler Hall Opens to Residents
December 2010 brought much excitement to Elwyn's Media campus with the opening of the Bruce Weschler Hall at Elwyn. Bruce Wechsler Hall is a 28,200 square-foot residential center that promotes both independence and security for the men and women with disabilities it will accommodate and is the first stand-alone building to be constructed on Elwyn’s Media campus since 1986. The new residence will house 36 residents and is named in honor of Bruce Wechsler, a long-time Elwyn resident, whose parents Alan and Dr. Laura Wechsler, of Philadelphia, made the lead gift to name the building in honor of their son.
This new facility represents the tremendous progress that has been made in the care and support of people with disabilities. The building is composed of two individual wings, with 18 bedrooms each joined by a central atrium. The atrium is a bright, spacious area that utilizes natural light where residents can enjoy views of the forested surroundings and serves as a convenient place to socialize with friends.
The building features many sustainable design components, including a white roof that reflects 95% of the sun's heat, five different types of glass that exploit the use of natural light and "rain gardens" to absorb storm water runoff. Customized design components insure the comfort and the highest level of care for residents including private rooms with 100% accessible individual bathrooms, state-of-the-art therapeutic tub rooms, spacious dining and living spaces and treatment rooms on each wing.
