Our HistoryJim DeLuca, CEO and Founder of J. J. DeLuca Company, grew up with a hammer in his fist and the pungent aroma of sawdust. For the son of a builder, the daily grind was intoxicating. Then reality set in. Earning a living and being successful as an independent contractor was difficult. "It's great to have a trade," his grandfather once told him, "but someone has to learn to keep the books." Carpenter by day and student by night, Jim pursued an accounting degree and a vision for a berth in the corporate world. DeLuca spent two years working for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania in a position that taught him some important lessons: strategic planning, scheduling, and how to be a team player. After two years at Bell, Jim DeLuca missed the sawdust. He left his job and dove back into the construction industry starting his own firm in 1981. With his wife Beverlee and limited capital, the company emerged overnight from the den of their Wallingford home. There was one employee, a desk and a drawing board. Early in his career the young entrepreneur learned an important lesson that was to become a life-long strategy for new business development: "Start with proper planning and scheduling. Get into the project fast. Work as hard the first day as you do the last." The company quickly built a reputation for integrity, good people, and unwavering commitment to clients. These values remain true today as the company celebrates 30+ years in business.Preserving Deep-Rooted Values. |
